Two Cuba-Destined Aid Vessels Listed Missing following Leaving Mexico.
A extensive search and recovery mission is presently ongoing in the Caribbean waters for two unlocated sailboats carrying aid cargo traveling from the Mexican coast to the island of Cuba.
Naval Search Missions Launched
Authorities in Mexico has dispatched naval assets and reconnaissance aircraft to find the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were carrying at least nine personnel, per a military release.
The ships had been scheduled to make landfall in Havana on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been radio silence from them and no confirmation of their safe arrival, the statement clarified.
Background of Relief to the Nation
The island nation has relied heavily on aid convoys from Mexico over the last several weeks, as the nation endures repeated national electricity failures.
"Both captains and crews are veteran seafarers, and the two ships are equipped with suitable safety equipment and emergency beacons," a spokesperson involved in the effort said.
The nine-person crew are nationals of the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Mexico said it has been in touch with maritime rescue coordination centres from each country along with their diplomatic representatives.
"Our team is working closely with the officials and continue to be hopeful in the crews' ability to safely arrive in Havana," the statement continued.
Recent Humanitarian Shipment
Previously that week, the government in Havana publicly celebrated and officially received a separate vessel that had delivered 14 tonnes of humanitarian aid to the nation.
That boat, called "a modern Granma" in reference to the boat in which Fidel Castro landed in Cuba to begin the revolution in the 1950s, carried solar panels, medicines, formula milk, cycles and foodstuffs.
Larger Political Backdrop
Charity groups and individuals have largely spearheaded attempts to ship essential supplies to Cuba beginning in January, coinciding with the time a fuel embargo on the country began.
Global bodies have since highlighted ""severe" shortages of supplies, with in excess of 50k surgeries cancelled in Cuba due to electricity supply constraints.
Diplomatic measures have increased in recent months, with remarks from several leaders highlighting the delicate nature of bilateral relations.
Reacting to recent proposals, a senior official from Cuba declared that "the governance model of Cuba is non-negotiable."
Accounts suggest that initial phases of talks commenced, although their current progress remains not publicly known.
The Mexican navy said it was pledged to using the full extent of its capabilities at its command to discover the sailboats and secure the safety of the sailors.
As of now, there has been silence on the disappeared vessels by the Cuban leadership.
