The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was found guilty of planning a armed takeover in September and sentenced more than 27 years in prison, but he continued under home detention pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after fresh information emerged.

This included attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a summons to a demonstration that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Judicial Records Show Flight Fears

In a filing authorising the detention, the magistrate said intelligence from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the tracking monitor to ensure success in his escape.

This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.

His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a assembly of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or see it all from your mobile device there on your settee? I invite you to battle with us."

He said the gathering would be so supporters could "pray for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the judge's determination was the possibility of the former president's "relocation to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a background of planning to request asylum through a embassy office", a declaration said.

The court filing underscores that the US embassy in the capital, Brazil's capital, is situated around 8 miles from Bolsonaro's home.

International Reactions

Bolsonaro's legal woes have provoked anger from fellow right-wing populist United States President President Trump, prompting him to enact a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.

Bolsonaro is being kept in a national police facility in Brasilia and will undergo a custody hearing on the following day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to permit him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with tracking devices.

They also requested that Bolsonaro be authorized to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he needed frequent medical attention for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.

Details of Guilty Verdict

The former president was convicted of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the presidential race to his left-wing rival, Lula.

High Court judges said that he was aware of a scheme which encompassed plans to kill the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.

The plot was stopped because it failed to get the support of the military leaders. The current president was took office without problem on January 1st, 2023.

But a week later, on 8 January, many Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged official structures in the national capital, the capital city.

The law enforcement intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.

The justices found that the demonstrators had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, bring back stability and bring him back to power.
