Senegal's Rising Star Lamine Camara: Starting from Dreams to Afcon Favourites.

As I enter the space, the young midfielder picks up a soccer ball he won’t let go of throughout our chat. It’s a powerful visual metaphor for a dream he has always held onto. “I only wanted football; I was focused solely on that,” remarks this Monaco and Senegal midfielder.

His determination and natural ability won over clubs like Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. However, the hardest person to convince was not a sporting director or manager, it was from his dad. “He didn’t want me to play football simply because he hadn’t seen me play,” says Camara.

Surmounting Initial Obstacles

Eventually, on “a special day,” Camara earned his father’s blessing to pursue his path in the game. A further barrier was his small stature, which discouraged local club Casa Sports from giving him a deal.

Nevertheless, the famed academy – the club that produced talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. After he earned the best player in a local competition, the scouts were “shocked” to learn he was not tied down. They acted quickly. “They took me straight to the training centre. They didn’t want me from going back to Casamance,” he recalled.

A Landmark Season and European Arrival

That decision set him on a pathway to Europe. A defining period came in 2023, “an unforgettable year,” starting with him lifting the African Nations Championship. Just weeks later, despite fatigue, he played in the Under-20s Afcon, leading his country to the title and being named player of the tournament.

A month later, he signed for Metz, emulating Mané. “Settling in wasn't a challenge,” says the 21-year-old. He has lived by himself in Europe, a choice his relatives support to keep him focused.

Influences and Playing Style

Distractions are not really a concern for Camara, who looks up to the Belgian maestro's “modesty” and superb playing qualities. Additionally, he's a huge fan of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His powerful shot and accuracy from dead-ball situations are key strengths. Camara confesses he must to control his competitive fire, after being sent off at the start of his spells at both Metz and Monaco. “It's a trait I carry with me!” he jokes.

Life at Monaco, Teammates and Future Goals

At Monaco, he cherishes the guidance of teammates like Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “When I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I told myself we are really lucky,” he said.

Currently, attention is firmly on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – there's no denying it. After defeating England in their own country…,” he states, referencing a historic 3-1 victory in Nottingham.

On a potential future move to the English top flight, he is committed to Monaco for now. “I feel really comfortable here,” he affirms. However, he's frequently teased by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Best Young Player awards. Camara jokes, but is serious about winning the senior Africa Player of the Year in the future.

“The pressure is on us – we can’t hide from that. Having beaten England in their own country… it instills confidence.”

Moving forward, Lamine Camara combines humble beginnings, steely determination, and grand ambitions targeting to guide Senegal to continental glory and build his own legendary path in the world of football.
