Past Comments on Convicts
Over Bolsonaro’s long political career, the far-right ex- paratrooper showed little sympathy for the country's prison population.
“Why should we give these scoundrels a good life?” he once mused. “They ought to simply be screwed, full-fucking-stop. That's my opinion.”

Jail Facility Discussion
Yet the possibility of Bolsonaro himself ending up in the Papuda prison maximum security prison in Brasília has horrified allies, four of whom this week toured the facility in an apparent bid to dissuade the supreme court from sending him there.

The lawmaker, a representative for the current leader's allied group, stated: “Not a soul wishes Bolsonaro to be put in a dark cell. No one desires Bolsonaro to be put in segregation. Not a soul wishes Bolsonaro to go hungry or for him to have to rest on hard ground. We wish him to receive respectful care – but proper treatment in prison. He must not continue being his own prison warden for his entire life.”
He observed how Bolsonaro supporters, who have spent years celebrating the harsh treatment of convicts, had suddenly woken up to their privileges. “Recently has the far-right – which has repeatedly claimed that civil liberties were not for lawbreakers – chosen to inspect a jail to discover what circumstances are really like,” he said.
“He is a lawbreaker,” the congressman maintained, but that did not mean he merited “humiliating, insulting handling”.
