Nicolas Sarkozy to Pen Jail Diary Chronicling His 20 Days In Custody

Nicolas Sarkozy will soon publish a book next month named Notes from a Cell, chronicling his time endured in custody.

The announcement emerged shortly after the ex-leader was released while he appeals the court ruling on charges of illegal collaboration in a case to secure political financing provided by the government of the late Libyan dictator.

Prison Experience: Solitary Musings

“Inside jail one sees little, with little to occupy time,” he notes in a preview, implying the memoir is more about his reflections from solitary confinement as opposed to a broader observation of the overcrowded and struggling jail system in France.

“Silence escapes me, which doesn’t exist in that facility, where noise is a lot to hear,” he continues. “The din unfortunately never stops. However, akin to empty spaces, personal reflection is strengthened in prison.”

Freedom Plea: Describing the Ordeal

At his release request hearing, he had appeared via screen from a room in prison, depicting prison life as draining. He stated to the judge: “I must acknowledge the correctional officers, displaying remarkable compassion, and who helped make this ordeal bearable – as it truly is one.”

“I didn’t expect that in my seventies, I’d be in prison. It’s an ordeal I must endure. I confess it’s hard, extremely tough. It has an impact every inmate because it’s gruelling.”

Historical Context

The former president, the ex-head of state for a five-year term, was the first former head in the European Union and the first postwar leader in the French Republic to serve time in prison.

Prior to imprisonment he mentioned he intended to spend the period for authoring a memoir.

Books in Prison

Unconfirmed is if he found the opportunity to review and analyze the volumes he took into prison: a biography of Jesus in two parts and Alexandre Dumas’s novel the classic tale, a plot where an innocent man ends up incarcerated later flees to exact retribution.

Life in Confinement

Sarkozy was held in solitary confinement due to safety concerns in a cell roughly 100 square feet including private facilities in the Paris jail located in the capital. Security personnel stayed in the next cell.

It was stated that he had eaten just yogurt while inside because he feared prison cuisine may have been contaminated. Options were available for self-catering but he turned this down, based on unnamed sources. Not known is if he will detail his dietary choices.

Lawyer’s Statements

His attorney, who visited his client every day while he was in prison, stated during proceedings he would be safer released than inside. “He received death threats, listened to yells during nighttime plus rapid actions in a neighbouring cell during an inmate’s self-injury.”

Case Background

He entered custody on 21 October after a French court imposed five years in prison for illegal collaboration related to a plan to acquire campaign funds for his 2007 presidential race.

He maintains his innocence challenging the decision, with a new trial planned for early next year.
