Forecasters are saying a frosty beginning to the new year, with snowfall anticipated throughout a lot of the UK. Those celebrating are being urged to dress warmly as near-freezing temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Hogmanay Plans Proceed In Spite of Alerts

Edinburgh's iconic Hogmanay events are set to go ahead, following last year's postponement. This is in spite of yellow warnings for snow in northern Scotland.

"A cold New Year's Eve evening for those out celebrating, so extra layers will be necessary," noted the national forecaster.

Fireworks Under Mostly Clear but Frosty Skies

Across the UK, the weather is expected to be suited to fireworks celebrations, with dry conditions and open skies. Readings are forecast to be low, making extra layers vital, said forecasters.

To the north, skies will be more overcast, but this is not anticipated to impact visibility for watching fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.

Broad Snow Warnings for New Year's Day

As we enter Friday, snow alerts have been issued across Northern Ireland and from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

• Travelers are advised to plan for delays for journeys on the road.
• Delays and cancellations are anticipated on public transport.

Temperatures Forecast to Plummet Further

Going into the new year, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are expected to drop further as snowfall and high winds are likely to affect the north of the country.

Around 10cm of snow is forecast to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.

Public Health Advisories Released

At the same time, amber-level health advisories have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to continue until noon on 5 January, with readings expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Officials stated this indicated the weather could to lead to significant impacts across health and social care services. This involves a likely increase in the number of deaths among vulnerable individuals or those 65 and older.

The message for all is clear: to see the new year in security, preparing for winter conditions is absolutely paramount.
