Information Available About the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack

At least 16 lives lost their lives and over 40 sustained injuries when assailants fired on a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local authorities are describing as a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, officials have announced the death toll is 16, including one of the suspected attackers. Additionally, 42 people with injuries were taken to medical facilities.

Those who died have not yet been formally identified, but authorities state their ages are from 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Known as a father of five children, he served as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She described the moments leading up to the attack, saying they had been standing together when the shooting erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having endured unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

In a statement, a senior official declared that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the message read.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was also killed during the attack, according to reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with a number in critical condition. Those hurt include two officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Called a hero, he received bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He stated he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he listened to “a large number” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
