“It was unfortunate. It was kind of an exchange with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “There was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not New York fans, our fans. The entire stadium was filled with excitement for the Dallas team.”
Jones additionally clarified that the gesture was entirely unintentional, happening amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I simply put up the wrong finger,” he noted. “The action was inadvertently performed. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. However, it got corrected pretty quick.”
League Precedent for Owner Penalties
This incident isn’t the initial instance an league proprietor has been fined for misconduct. Previous examples include:
- Carolina Panthers proprietor Tepper was fined $300,000 for tossing a beverage at fans in January 2024.
- Former Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a similar offensive signal.
