Both Deceased Students Named in the Providence Campus Attack as Authorities Continue Manhunt for Perpetrator.
Two students who were killed in Saturday’s tragic incident at Brown University were being remembered Monday – as a manhunt for their assailant persisted following the discharge by Rhode Island officials of the only individual detained in connection in the case.
Honoring a Lost Student
The student Ella Cook, a second-year scholar from Alabama, was described as “an amazing, stable, pious, radiant soul”, as stated by the Cathedral Church of the Advent, Birmingham, which honored her memory at a gathering on Sunday.
Cook was the vice-presidency of Brown’s chapter of College Republicans of America, as the club stated. The White House press secretary also posted sympathies publicly, saying in part: “Words cannot express. Remembering her family and friends, particularly her mother and father.”
An International Student
The other deceased individual was an Uzbek national named MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, an Uzbek national in his freshman year at the renowned school, according to relatives.
His name was confirmed by the Uzbek Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“He was exceptionally gentle, witty, and bright. He had big dreams of becoming a neurosurgeon and helping people,” his sister, Samira Umurzokova said in a memorial statement.
Details of the Attack
An additional nine individuals were injured in the weekend shooting in the engineering building of Brown’s campus in Providence, during the university's examination week.
Officials stated on Sunday evening that a man aged 24 arrested in a police operation at a hotel about 17 miles from the campus earlier in the day was released from custody.
“A perpetrator remains free,” said the state's top prosecutor, Peter Neronha.
He added, “Investigations can lead one way, and then you must reassess and head another way, and that is the current situation over the last 24 hours or so.”
Public Fear
Providence’s mayor, Brett Smiley, admitted: “It is expected to provoke new worry for our community”.
The shooter discharged a weapon inside a lecture hall in the building on Saturday, firing more than 40 rounds from a 9mm pistol, a authority told the Associated Press.
Law enforcement that entered the hotel recovered a pair of pistols and two loaded 30-round magazines when the individual was detained, the news agency reported.
Condition of the Injured
Regarding the nine injured, one pupil was released from the hospital, mentioned Christina Paxson, Christina Paxson. An additional seven were in critical but stable condition, and one was in critical condition, authorities stated on Sunday.

The US ambassador, Jonathan Henick, said he was “extremely sorrowful” by the passing of Umurzokov in a tribute. “We offer our heartfelt sympathies to Mr Umurzokov’s family, friends, and schoolmates and lament the passing of his bright future.”

Saturday’s killings at Brown, the country's seventh most historic college with about thousands of bachelor's and 3,000 graduate students, took place amid one of at least 392 mass shootings recorded nationally so far in the current year, according to records. The following Monday was the 349th day of the year.
