Adult Swim's Leading New Show of This Year Gets a Significant Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.
In October of last year, the late-night programming block welcomed back its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, not long after, the network introduced a brand-new animated series with a distinctly unique feel. Haha, You Clowns proved to be heartwarming and calm, in the spirit of a animated take of a contemplative talk show. In an era often defined by bleakness, this show's wholesomeness found an audience and turned it into a breakout hit.
A Major Commitment
In mid-December, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for a further two seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The show centers on three respectful teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four key characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," stated Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Executive Acclaim
The official statement also included commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He specifically highlighted the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its uniquely offbeat style.
"All of you supported this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something unexpectedly cozy about observing this lovable family navigate their simple existence.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa stated his hope to move the comedy genre beyond its current layer of irony. He traced this trend to various cultural shifts.
“There's this level of irony that we are trapped in,” said Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
What Comes Next
Now, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa has the opportunity to catalyze that very evolution. If nothing else, the renewal promises audiences a little more time to experience the heartfelt moments of the beloved Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The complete first season is currently streaming on HBO Max.
